Advocacy Toolkits: Engaging with Members of Congress

Advocacy is a marathon, not a sprint. We must develop and maintain relationships with our members of Congress throughout the year. Use these toolkits to prepare for meetings, town halls, and events at your institutions. You can also adapt these tips for advocacy with your state legislature and city government.

  • Schedule a Meeting

One of the most effective ways to educate and influence your members of Congress is to have a face-to-face meeting with them or their staff.

  • Conduct a Meeting

Prepare for a successful meeting on Capitol Hill or in your local state or district office by following these steps.

  • Invite a Member to your Institution

Hosting a member of Congress at your campus for a public event is a powerful advocacy tool.

  • Attend a Town Hall

Ask your member of Congress a question at a local town hall meeting.

  • Request a Floor Statement

Ask your member of Congress to make a public statement on the House or Senate floor in support of international students.

  • Utilize Social Media

Watch a recording of NAFSA’s Intro to Social Media for Advocacy online event.
