Reaching for a DREAM
Support a Path of Hope for Undocumented Students
Tens of thousands of students graduating from high school each year are left without a path to contribute their full potential. These young people were born outside the United States and brought here by their parents, and this is the only home they know. Many of them want to get an education and contribute to American society. But U.S. immigration laws make it very difficult for them to do so. They live in fear of deportation and find themselves a seemingly endless limbo.
A solution is in the works: the DREAM Act would create a path for these students to legally pursue educational and career opportunities in the United States. But until Congress acts, many of these students are trapped. They need what’s called “deferred action” – a status the federal government can grant to halt deportation, based on the merits of an individual’s case. Right now the Department of Homeland Security grants this on an ad hoc basis, as in the case of Harvard student Eric Balderas.
We believe all DREAM Act-eligible students should receive “deferred action” as a matter of government policy, while the DREAM Act and comprehensive immigration reform await action in Congress.
Help Students Now
